Site Management

A contractor’s blatant disregard in rectifying a number of safety breaches identified at a site described as a “potential death trap” has cost it a £20,000 fine.

An HSE Inspector was nearby when he observed the work practice above. Once on the site, he identified multiple failings, which led him to serve eight Prohibition Notices on the principal contractor.

The Notices covered unsafe working at height, dangerous scaffolding, internal and external fire-related hazards, and the use of dangerous electrical equipment. The company also supplied “appallingly inadequate” documentation for risk assessments and project management, according to the inspector.

Sitting on 25 April, Westminster Magistrates’ Court sentenced the Principal Contractor to pay a fine of £20,000, as well as £5940 in costs, for a breach of reg.26(2) of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007, in relation to poor site management and failure to adhere to enforcement action. The company pleaded guilty, but was not present at the hearing.

The inspector concluded by stating that "The construction site at Sylvan Hill was a potential death trap, with scant regard for safety, or employee welfare. Even though there were no reported incidents at the site, serious breaches were routinely committed, which could have resulted in death or serious injury."

Belfast Deaf Utd

Cogratulations to McL&H employee Eoghan Fee and Belfast Deaf Utd as they retained their UK Deaf football champions title after defeating European Cup holders St. John's Arsenal.

It was a thrilling game that had everything, laced with dramatic twists and turns but ultimately Belfast Deaf deserved their victory. Two superb goals from Man of the Match Brian Babb, some sparkling team football mixed with raw courage and resilience were the key ingredients of this success.

The local lads were in cruise control but in the 68th minute the game took a dramatic twist as Belfast Deaf Utd where reduced to 10 men and Arsenal clawed a goal back. Arsenal's pressure was further rewarded in the 88th minute, a set piece into the Belfast area was headed home by an Arsenal striker for 2-2.

So penalties beckoned. Arsenal scored their first four kicks. Dougherty, Campbell, Foy and McKee replied for Belfast but Byrne shot over and Arsenal had a kick to win the game. Keating had other ideas though and pulled off a remarkable save, repeating it again moments later with Bobby McAra becoming another hero, coolly finding the bottom corner to win the Cup for Belfast and spark wild celebrations.
